Description: Seeking a mechanical engineer or mechatronics specialist to design and build a custom benchtop machine for internal company use. Project Overview: Purpose: Precision dispensing of liquids (of various densities/viscosities) into liquid nitrogen to create uniform frozen lyobeads. Liquid handling Capable with low-to-mid viscosity fluids (0.5–2.0 P). Intended Use: Internal laboratory use only (not for commercial sale). Environment: Must operate reliably in extremely cold conditions (liquid nitrogen handling). Key Requirements: Mechanical System: -Precision bead dispensing with adjustable volume (5 µL to 50 µL per bead). -Dual nozzles with independent bead counting for each line. -Motorized rotating turntable with adjustable speed and movement control. -Bead production rate: Continuous operation at ~3,500–7,000 beads/hour. -Micrometer-based fine adjustments for bead size calibration. -Turntable system: Segmented LN₂ turntable design (not a static tray). -Design or adaptation of a Dewar insert to prevent bead clumping and allow easy bead collection. -Cold environment durability: Must survive and function around LN₂ without freezing mechanicals or electronics. Software/Controls: -Custom software to control dispensing parameters, nozzle timing, turntable speed, etc. -Ability to create, save, and load “recipes” (preset settings for different bead formulations). -Real-time bead counting for each nozzle. -User-friendly setup for priming, cleaning, and switching between recipes. Engineering Constraints: -Machine must function reliably under extremely cold operating conditions (near liquid nitrogen temps). -Mechanical, electrical, and software systems must be robust and durable for regular internal use. Deliverables: -Fully functional working machine ready for our internal R&D and production use. -Software with recipe-saving and operational control. -Source code, design files, and a Bill of Materials (BOM) for any future rebuilds or upgrades. -Basic operational and maintenance guide. Ideal Candidate: -Strong track record of building integrated mechanical-electrical systems. -Comfortable developing both the mechanical and control software aspects. -Experience with cryogenic systems, microfluidics, droplet generation, or similar areas is a plus. -Comfortable signing a standard NDA and IP assignment agreement. Please provide: -Examples of similar machines you have built (photos or videos preferred). -Your typical project approach (phases, timelines, how you like to work). -Rough time and budget estimate to complete this project. -Any initial thoughts you have about how you would approach building a lyobead generator specifically.
