Experienced High School Speech & Debate Coach (International Extemp)
Job Description: We are seeking a knowledgeable and passionate Speech & Debate Coach with a strong background in high school extemporaneous speaking formats. The student is a highly motivated freshman competitor who has already achieved notable success in speech and debate tournaments, including a recent qualification for an important International Extemp competition this May. We’re looking for a coach who can provide targeted instruction, constructive feedback, and strategic guidance to help this student excel at the state and national levels. Responsibilities: Conduct regular one-on-one or small-group coaching sessions focusing on International Extemp. Develop and refine the student’s research, analytical, organizational, and delivery skills. Provide real-time critiques, in-depth feedback, and performance improvement plans. Offer resources, practice prompts, and time management strategies specific to extemp formats. Prepare the student to handle current events topics confidently and adapt to new information quickly. Requirements: Proven experience coaching high school Speech & Debate, particularly in extemporaneous speaking. Strong familiarity with competition rules, formats, and best practices (NSDA, UIL, or similar). Demonstrated success in coaching students to high placements or awards in extemp categories. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and mentor. Availability to conduct sessions online with a flexible schedule in the weeks leading up to the competition. Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience judging or competing at the state/national level in International Extemp. Ability to provide references or documented results of students’ competition achievements. Understanding of diverse extemp topics and research techniques.
