Camera: Lens: Color Profile: Lighting: *Please take the lead on depth, lighting, etc. My only input is the background. As much as possible, we want a clean background in the shots. It’s okay if “things” are in the background, but we also don’t want too much clutter or mess. I understand for some shots this may be tougher than others. Just something to keep in mind as much as possible.* Tips For Subjects (Clients & Stylist) (I’d recommend telling these to anyone who will be in a shot) SMILE. If everyone just did ONE thing… make sure it’s this. (obviously this doesn’t have to be the case in EVERY shot, so use accordingly.) Posture - Shoulders back, head up straight. Body Language - This is something to consider on a shot by shot basis. For example when taking a shot of a client walking into the salon: You don’t want them to have their arms crossed, head hunched down and a monotone facial expression. You’d want a nice smile, a modest strut in the arms and a confident posture. A little trick I like to say is this… Your body language should be like it’s your first day at your DREAM job. Sure you might be a little nervous, but otherwise you would be confident, welcoming and excited. For face on/head on shots - Have the subject look directly into the lens. It creates captivating content. Of course we want “off angles” too where this isn’t the case, but we definitely want some shots where the subject is looking right into the lens. With all of this… you ultimately want a relaxed feel. If they are overthinking it can come off stiff and over produced. Tell them a joke if you have to lol. Also side tip for you Darren, introduce yourself to everyone and give them a warm welcome. Time and time again I have seen the video person just stand there in the background as the “video person” and it makes it awkward. Become friends with the subjects and your job becomes 10x easier. Standard Shot Ideas/List (These are going to be your bread and butter/go-to shots that you will definitely want to get. I’d recommend starting with these. As everyone gets more relaxed and on the same page, start playing around with some of the “Fun Shot Ideas” below.) *** = Not sure if this is something the salon does, but tossing out the idea. BEFORE Service: Client walking into the salon Client taking a seat in the chair ***Taking the client's coat and hanging it up? Handing them a coffee or mimosa? Etc Stylist and client having a consultation Laughing, smiling, looking ALIVE! Shots of the hair before Face on shot Off angle shots Wrap around 360 shot Since you are using natural lighting it’s probably easier to have the client spin in the chair versus walking around them. But if you can get both, that’s awesome. DURING Service: Get a variety of shots here while the service is happening Off angles Face on angles Wrap around/360 This will probably be a more simple set of shots as the stylist has to work on the service and the client has to sit there AFTER Service: Capture the final product of the hair Capture that "initial" WOW expression on the clients face Shots of the stylist and client looking at the hair together Happy, smiling, fulfilled, etc Off angles, face on, wrap around Client walking out of the salon Client taking a selfie of their new hair When getting these after shots as well, have the client do some different motions Play with their hair Spin around Etc Additional B-Roll: Get a variety of general salon B-roll Walk throughs, pans, etc Get some B-roll of owner in the salon Walking around, walking towards camera, maybe like an “MTV Cribs” style over the shoulder follow shots, etc Fun Shot Ideas (You can film some of these on their own as well as mix them into standard shots) Client running into the salon (playing on the “run don’t walk” trend on social) When filming the “before” shot of their hair, film face on and have the stylist spin the client 180 quickly. Then when you film an “after” shot you are face on but initially filming the back of the clients head, then the stylist spins them 180 quickly to face the camera. In editing we can use these to make a quick 360 before/after style edit. When filming the final product the stylist and client give each other a high-5 or a hug As the day goes on feel free to toss in some more fun ideas using everything on this document.
