The Queer Trans Project (QTP) is a Black- and Trans-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit that distributes free gender-affirming resources to trans and queer individuals across the U.S. through our Build-a-Queer Kit program and other services. We’ve shipped hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of supplies and supported thousands of people—but our website hasn’t kept up with the scale and care of our work. We’re looking for a developer or designer who understands both Shopify and nonprofits, and who can help us create a more affirming, functional, and user-friendly digital experience. Scope of Work: We need a developer who can support both design and functionality, especially around our Shopify-based kit distribution system. We currently use Shopify for both sales (Gender Grip tape) and for distributing free items (Build-a-Queer Kits). The ideal candidate is comfortable balancing e-commerce needs with nonprofit values and accessibility. What we need: Website Refresh & Redesign Update overall design to better reflect our identity as a BIPOC, youth-led, trans nonprofit. Improve homepage, navigation, and content layout. Ensure accessibility, mobile responsiveness, and visual cohesion. Build-a-Queer Kit Section Overhaul Rework how our free kits are displayed and requested. Improve understanding of early access programs (e.g. BIPOC, Disability). Clarify eligibility, inventory status, and what users can expect after checkout. Improve backend automation (we already use Shopify Flow, but want to enhance it). Donation Flow Optimization Help us build a branded donation page (we currently use ActBlue and Givebutter). Integrate or link cleanly with Givebutter and create a smooth donor experience. SEO and Discoverability Improve search engine rankings for core programs. Ensure pages and products are fully optimized (meta tags, alt text, descriptions, etc.). Backend Integration Ensure that Shopify connects smoothly with our other tools Reduce the amount of manual work required for order tracking and donor engagement. Our Ideal Partner: Familiar with Shopify (ideally with nonprofit experience). Understands inclusive and accessible web design. Has experience working with small, scrappy teams doing big-impact work. Communicates clearly and meets deadlines. Values trans lives and affirms the importance of dignity and representation in design. Timeline & Budget: We’re looking to start as soon as possible, with flexibility depending on your availability. This can be project-based with the potential for ongoing work as we grow. To Apply: Please include: Links to Shopify/nonprofit sites you’ve worked on. A short description of why this project speaks to you. Any thoughts you already have for improving a site like ours (www.queertransproject.org).
