Job Title: Comic Illustrator for Nonprofit Animation Project – Visualizing Black-Led Legacy in Southeast Queens Job Description: Southern Queens Park Association Inc. (SQPA) is developing a comic-style animated short to celebrate over 50 years of community empowerment, youth development, and Black-led institutional leadership in Southeast Queens. We’re seeking a comic illustrator with strong storytelling chops and a passion for culturally rooted visual narratives. The project will visually capture SQPA’s journey across three segments: Past – Founding of Roy Wilkins Park and SQPA, including key partnerships (NAACP Jamaica Branch, Springfield Rifles, Roy Wilkins Dolphins) Present – Ongoing youth programs (Compass, Community Schools @ IS 8), park revitalization, and SQPA’s community impact today Future – Vision for growth: the Goodrich Legacy Center, cultural stewardship, and community-led development in the next decade The ideal illustrator will: Have experience in comic, storyboard, or animated illustration Be able to bring emotion, movement, and depth to community-based narratives Work closely with our writer, creative lead, and stakeholders to reflect historical and cultural accuracy Create illustrations that balance realism and stylized storytelling Deliverables include: Illustrations for all three segments of the animated short (approx. 6–8 minutes total runtime) Character concepts and setting designs based on real people and places Collaboration on visual tone and scene flow based on a finalized script Input on a research packet to ensure accurate representation of key historical elements Bonus if you have: Experience illustrating stories centered on BIPOC communities or historical themes Familiarity with Southeast Queens or NYC-based community organizations Animation or motion graphic knowledge (not required but a plus!) Timeline: Illustration work will begin mid-May and run through June 30, 2025. Must be available for team check-ins and feedback rounds throughout production.
