Senior Accounting Consultant (Freelance/Contract)

We are seeking an experienced Senior Accounting Consultant to support our organization through critical improvements and ongoing oversight of our accounting systems and internal finance team. This role is ideal for a seasoned accounting professional who thrives on solving complex accounting challenges and enjoys working directly with business owners to drive strategic improvements. Our ideal candidate is someone who can step in during times of financial reporting inefficiencies or inaccuracies, assess current systems, implement improvements, and train staff to ensure accurate, timely financial reporting moving forward. You should be a self-starter, proactive communicator, and someone who takes pride in delivering clarity and insight to help leadership make sound financial decisions. What You’ll Do: Diagnose issues within current accounting systems and processes and develop action plans for resolution. Work closely with ownership and internal accounting staff to establish a reliable, efficient weekly accounting process. Provide hands-on training and mentorship to bookkeepers and junior accounting staff. Guide the business through full-cycle monthly accounting processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. Offer strategic insights through budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning. Conduct quarterly financial reviews and maintain oversight of accounting data integrity. Coordinate with external CPAs or tax professionals as needed. What We’re Looking For: 10+ years of accounting experience, including leadership roles (Controller, Accounting Manager, etc.) Strong background in improving or building accounting systems and processes from the ground up Experience training and mentoring accounting staff Excellent understanding of GAAP and financial reporting best practices Strong communication skills and a consultative, solutions-driven approach Experience working with small to mid-sized businesses (bonus if freelance or fractional work) Proficiency with accounting platforms (QuickBooks, Xero, etc.) Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; MBA or CPA a plus Previous experience working with construction, service-based, or multi-industry clients Experience with remote work and managing financial processes virtually
